Traditional Orthodontics and Clear Aligners in San Francisco, CA

Orthodontics refers to dental treatments performed to straighten the misaligned teeth. There are two major types of orthodontic treatments which are traditional orthodontics and clear aligners.

Traditional Orthodontics

Traditional orthodontics uses metal braces and wires to shift teeth into their ideal position. They are one of the most common orthodontic treatments and are extremely effective, working to correct even the most severe misalignment.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are removable, transparent aligners that are custom-made to fit the shape of your teeth. They are made with a smooth plastic material that fits over your teeth to gently reposition them.

Dental Procedure of Traditional Orthodontics and Clear Aligners

The dentist initiates the dental procedure of traditional orthodontics after a complete dental checkup. Braces consist of brackets bonded to the teeth, and wires that are threaded through the brackets. It gradually applies pressure to the teeth, causing them to slowly shift into proper alignment.
Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable, custom aligners to gradually shift your teeth into proper alignment. The dentist will design and create the aligners for you in a professional dental lab. Each aligner is designed from exact imprints taken of your teeth and are created using your specific treatment plan.

Traditional Orthodontics vs Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are removable and do not require any wires and brackets, unlike traditional orthodontics.
Clear aligners are practically invisible. They are made of thin, transparent plastic, which makes them virtually invisible when you wear them. Traditional orthodontics make wires, brackets and bands visible on the teeth.
Clear aligners are comfortable as they are made of soft, flexible plastic and are custom-contoured to fit your mouth. As you wear them, they gradually shift your teeth into their correct position. The brackets of traditional orthodontics may cause soft tissue injuries.
